Honrando la Tierra
Mano Amiga en Roseburg reconoce, honra y respeta a los pueblos indígenas de esta región —las tribus y bandas del Valle de Umpqua— en cuyas tierras ancestrales nos encontramos hoy. Estas incluyen a los Nahánkhuotana (Cow Creek Takelma) y los Upper Umpqua, los Yoncalla Kalapuyans, los Southern Molallans y los Lower Umpqua. Estas tribus firmaron tratados bajo la amenaza de genocidio, cedieron sus tierras y fueron forzadas a reubicarse en la Reserva India de Grand Ronde en 1856. Los descendientes de estas cinco tribus son ahora miembros de las Tribus Confederadas de Grand Ronde y de la Banda Cow Creek de la Tribu de Indios Umpqua.

También reconocemos que otros llegaron aquí como inmigrantes y algunos fueron traídos esclavizados por los colonizadores. Le invitamos a considerar quiénes están presentes, quiénes son representados y quiénes no lo son, y a reflexionar sobre el papel que cada uno de nosotros tiene en sanar las heridas del pasado para que juntos podamos seguir construyendo un mañana más justo y esperanzador.

Honoring the Land
Mano Amiga en Roseburg acknowledges, honors, and respects the Indigenous people of this region — the tribes and bands of the Umpqua Valley — on whose ancestral lands we now stand. These include the Nahánkhuotana (Cow Creek Takelma) and the Upper Umpqua, the Yoncalla Kalapuyans, the Southern Molallans, and the Lower Umpqua. These tribes signed treaties under threat of genocide, ceded their lands, and were forcibly relocated to the Grand Ronde Indian Reservation in 1856. The descendants of these five tribes are now members of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians.

The tribal area includes the entire Umpqua watershed and surrounding regions, which were shared with the Molalla, Yoncalla, and other Umpqua tribes. The Indigenous peoples of the Umpqua Valley maintain deep, hereditary connections to these lands, where they have lived for over 10,000 years, and continue to defend their sovereign rights and care for the health and welfare of their traditional territory.
Mano Amiga en Roseburg gratefully recognizes that the Umpqua Valley is home to many diverse Indigenous communities who continue to live, work, and thrive here today. We invite you to join us in recognizing all of the above as a shared responsibility — to reflect on privilege, accumulated resources, and land ownership; to consider how some may have benefited from the theft of this land as descendants of colonizers who displaced its original stewards; and to think about what each of us is willing to do to contribute to repair.
We also acknowledge that others came here as immigrants, and some were brought enslaved by colonizers. We invite you to consider who is present, who is represented, and who is not — and to reflect on each of our roles in healing the wounds of the past so that together we can continue building a more just and hopeful tomorrow.
